Mary Washington House

George Washington purchased the house in 1772 for his mother, Mary Ball Washington, for $275. The home was located close to her daughter Betty Washington Lewis, who resided at Kenmore Plantation, and her son Charles Washington's Rising Sun Tavern.

The list of visitors to this small comfortable home is a fine one - George Washington of course, Chief Justice John Marshall, George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, several members of the Lee family, and the Marquis de Lafayette. She resided in the home for seventeen years until her death in 1789.
