Menokin - Built: 1769
Menokin, built circa 1769 as a wedding gift for Francis Lightfoot Lee and Rebecca Tayloe from Rebecca's father, John Tayloe II, who built neighboring Mount Airy .Soon after, Francis Lightfoot Lee joined the cause of American independence, serving in the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1779 and signing the Declaration of Independence along with his brother, Richard Henry Lee, and the Articles of Confederation.
The house over the years fell into ruins and eventually partially collapsed. The current structure is undergoing a unique restoration in which it is being reconstructed as much as possible. The missing portions of the structure will be replaced with glass. The home will serve as an architectural study of 18th century construction and architecture. A very worth while endeavor.
